Jun 12, 2015 - The Senators enjoyed another sunny festival of rugby and general merriment last weekend at The Old Man of the Mountain Tournament in Franconia, NH, once again staying at the celebrated Gale River Motel.
On Saturday, after a hearty breakfast at Polly's Pancake Parlour, we played our first match against Seacoast at 10 a.m. It was a close game, going right to the wire at which point Seacoast scored a try under the posts to tie it at 25-25. The almost-certain conversion followed. Harris positioned himself under the posts to attempt a heroic charge-down. The kicker started his run-up, Harris sprinted off the line, leapt into the air with arms stretched upwards, and successfully tipped the ball over the crossbar. This would have been an incredible save, had we been playing soccer, but unfortunately in rugby the outcome was 2 points to Seacoast, so they won 27-25...Harris would have been hung, drawn and quartered at that stage, but the punishment was reduced to being awarded the Shirt of Shame (which, to his relief was mysteriously absent), as earlier in the game Romano had failed to score under the posts despite having a clear run, and Connell missed a simple conversion from in front of the posts. So really, it wasn't Harris' fault at all....
The second match at 2 p.m. against Worcester started badly, with a keen-looking Worcester going into an early lead. The Senators finally woke up and took the game to the opposition, scoring a plethora of tries to steal the game 101-20.***
***The above score may be inaccurate due to the writer receiving a bump to the head during the game, but we definitely won!
After a few beers we retired to the Motel for swimming, hot-tubbing, beers, BBQ, beers, and of course, more beers and a sing-song at the Dutch Treat bar in "downtown" Franconia. This year, much to everyone's relief, Hartigan managed to walk outside every time he needed to fart - well done, Grandad!
