Senators narrowly defeated by Belleville

May 26, 2014 - The Senators played their first "proper" game of the season yesterday against the Belleville Bulldogs. This was always going to be a tough fixture coming so early on in the season. Nevertheless, a strong Senators squad turned out to see a rather "youthful" Belleville squad descend from their school bus (literally) at TERP and take the field.

Belleville started the stronger, and ran in an early try. The Senators then woke up and started defending well, frustrating several scything Belleville attacks, often instigated by their mobile fly-half and Belleville man-of-the-match. Eventually the Senators defence was once again breached for a 0-2 deficit. Then, just before half time, the Senators hit back as Troy Messam picked up a loose ball out wide and sprinted in for the score. At half-time with a score of 1-2 the Senators were still in the game, but they were struggling to get ball out to the danger men in the backs, despite some good line-out takes by Senators man-of-the-match Mike Storeshaw.

The second half was a closely fought contest, with Belleville adding another score in the fourth quarter (during which one of their players suffered a leg injury that required an ambulance to be called). During the dying minutes the Senators pushed to the Belleville try line, at which point Bill Hourston, wearing dayglo pink bermuda shorts (for which he was awarded the Shirt of Shame), picked up the ball from the back of a ruck and dived over the line (although he insists that he sprinted at least 30 yards, beating the fullback and both wings). That made the final score 2-3 (or 10-15 if you count points).

Mike Storeshaw won the drink-off after the game, so that makes it 1-1...

A big Senators thank you to Mary-Lee (Seguin) for organizing the post-match food!

Next game: Ottawa Indians (Sunday @ TERP; k.o. 1:30 p.m.)
