May 21, 2014 - The full Senators squad turned out at TERP last Saturday afternoon for the annual season opener: the Captain versus President brawl. Teams had been selected in advance by a top secret draw, and "on paper" they looked fairly well-matched. The pitch at TERP was surprisingly firm, if a little bumpy and long-grassed. A good crowd of WAGs, supporters and other hangers-on had turned out to cheer on the veteran warriors.
The referee blew his whistle to kick off the game, and the two sides proceeded to kick lumps out of each other. A fairly scrappy affair ensued, interspersed with moments of individual and collective "genius". The final score was 5 tries to 1, in favour of the Captain's side - a bit of a thrashing really. Notable tries were scored by backs Chris Beggley and Dave Connell, and Colin Currie was lucky not to have been red-carded for his outrageous pulling-down-without-the-ball of Nathan Harris in a clear try-scoring position - for which a penalty try was immediately awarded by the ref. Harris was also awarded the "Shirt of Shame" post-game for his supposed "theatrical dive".
After a quick shower and scrub-up, the Senators retired to the TERP bar for a few beers, speeches and presentations, followed by a pub crawl starting at the Arrow & Loon and continuing along Bank Street...some carefully chosen pictures of our merriment can be seen on our facebook page.
Next Sunday: Belleville ! (TERP)
