Senators Entertain Cobourg Saxons

Jun 23, 2013 - A squad of 25 Senators (and a good hand-full of WAGs and supporters, clearly trawling for "Tour Points") hosted the Cobourg Saxons yesterday afternoon (3 p.m. kick-off) in near-perfect rugby-playing conditions at an overcast, slightly-drizzly TERP. Club Captain Warren "Bokke" Clifford was unavailable on this day due to the fact he was organizing his wife, Christine's surprise 40th birthday party (what a guy!). Newcomer Simon Tucker admirably replaced him at Fly-half, and vice-vice-captain Nathan Harris stepped in as skipper, as vice-captain John "Cecil" Allen was also still out with a knee injury. After the game, Harris was heard to say that, with Darren Elder, Dennis Sarasin, Rob Hicks and Mark Paterson all in the side, he couldn't get a word in edge-ways!

In their first ever fixture against Cobourg, the Senators were initially surprised and confused by the Saxons' tactic of all wearing number 1 on the back of their bright yellow shirts! The first quarter was a cagey affair, with both sides sizing each other up, but eventually in the second quarter, good ball for the Senators' back-line and some slick running and passing saw Andrew Bailes diving across the line for his first ever try for the Senators! This was followed a short time later by another scything back-line attack, this time finished off impressively by Fullback Chris Begley. The Senators made full use of their 25-man-strong squad, making whole-pack and wing changes every quarter. In the second half, another Senators attack was this time finished off by Rohan Henry, and a fourth try by Andrew Bailes for his second of the match. The Saxons came back into the game during the fourth quarter and managed to get one back, but the final score was 20-5 (4 tries to 1).

Cobourg then proceeded to play a second game against the Barrhaven Scottish...!

Next game: Syracuse Chargers (@ TERP), next Saturday 29th June, 1:30 p.m. kick-off.
