Jun 23, 2010 - Bell Rings Twice for Senators
The Senators new man Steve Bell got introduced to some good hard rugby when he suited up for the first time in 20 years. The first match saw Bell get involved when we took on the Bulldogs from Belleville. We opened up an early lead and really did not have to look back as we of course had our RA factor at work (Rookie Allowance) and of course it was all over when Gerry “The Master of the Sidestep” Lanigan put the second try over. When a red shorts scores it of course, is worth full value. We took the pedal off the metal for the second half when we relented and let them get a few on the board so they would come back next year. Said Steve after the game – “ I didn’t think old guys were supposed to tackle that hard.” Welcome to Old Boys Rugby.
Bell’s second match was last weekend when we travelled to Kingston to take on the Young Lads from Kingston as they have recruited some new youth to the club. This did not matter as we divided up some of the lads to play with the Senators to even it out. It was a forwards game all day long as we shut down the potent backs from Kingston. With time ticking down it was an epic battle with both sides pressing. Eventually a kick forward saw the Panther’s fullback turned and Scott Fortier picked up the ball to scoot in the 5 meters for the only try of the match. Afterwards we also won the post game match, when Man of the Match, Dan “One Gulp” Kline polished off his beer in record time before the stunned crowd. He drank and then sat down to watch the other guys eventually finish.
