Senators Bring Home Hardware

Aug 13, 2009 - The Senators over 50 squad was successful in the Canam Tournament held in Saranac Lake this past August long weekend. Senators looked resplendent in their talk of the town purple jerseys. As usual, we got of to a slow start when we let the Puque Exiles in on a couple of soft scores. They had a few suspect players who either dyed their hair or who looked decidedly younger and faster than the Senators. We roared back though and came close as on the last play of the game an unnamed Senator dropped the ball in the end zone for the winning try. Craig Turner later said that he obviously had not had the practice of scoring the past thirty five years. In the second game of the day the rain quit so we would not have the excuse that the ball was slippery. The Wild Oats must have been watching our first game as one of them roared in to the end zone after a 40 meter dash only to drop the ball directly under the post. From there on in it was the Senators all the way. Our front row anchored by Bill Erickson and new man Ashley was solid while Tim from PA and Scott Mills did a great job throwing it in. Lee Powell helped when needed upfront. Tim Holland and Craig Turner were stand out performers at second row. The back row with Hourston, Greg from Amoskeg, the Might Troll from Portland, Mark Hartigan and of course Jorgen Kruger our Captain. Sad news for Jorgen in this game as he was in the wrong place at the wrong time when one of the Wild Oats threw a straight arm that sent Jorgen to the hospital with his knee ligaments blown. Jorgen is looking for an exercise bike for his rehab so if you have one let him know. (krugerfam@rogers.com) Dimitry and Ross Monsour were active at scrum half while the likes of Liggy, Jim Nordin, Matt from Kingston, Tim Frank, Gerry Lanigan, Perky (who also suffered a triple team tackle and barley survived – luckily Dan Kline was able to keep him awake all night and infused him with beer.) and several others who dutifully filled in such as Darren (I look older in a beard) and hop along Al Rose helped round out the team. After the injury to Jorgen we put it in high gear to take the victory 25-14. This put us into the Consolation Final against the Mystic River side. They are a bunch of old farts who know how to host and drink beer two primary factors in Old Boys Rugby.

The game saw Senators open the scoring with Dimitry scooting in and then Greg from Amoskeg scoring another in the corner. Mystic came back to score 2 on their own which set up a tense last half. Mystic seem to come to life but failed to get near our end zone. Pat from Ajax was solid in the middle along with Terry from the Indians while Rick Middleton had recovered to come on in support at front row. With time ticking down Tim Frank sent the ball deep where we got the ball back for a scrum on the 8 meter line. Big Mark Hartigan did the 8th man pick, dished to Hop-Along Al who kindly rewarded Hourston with the ball who fell the last 2 meters for the final score. Senators 15 – Wild Oats 10. The fans went crazy and then after wards the skies opened up as god himself wept over our victory. Many thanks to George Fortier for his help. Next time though he should keep out of t-shirt shops before the big game.

On Sunday morning, we played Ottawa in the Consolation Bowl. We underachieved and lost by one try. Very disappointing, since many of us really don't like the team from Ottawa. They played as expected, dirty and
dishonorably.

Congratulations go out to the Myths and Legends with many Senators pitching up for them. As usual, they won for the tenth year in a row and captured the Over 45 division.

Next game is August 29th at TERP. There are a full slate of games this week. Check out the schedule at www.rugbyottawa.com

Keep September 19th open for our Indian Summer BBQ to be hosted by Bill + Pat Erickson
