Charlottetown Colonels & Summerside Suns Win Provincial 17U Girls Volleyball Titles



The Volleyball PEI Provincial 17U girls championship were held recently at Colonel Gray & Queen Charlotte Schools. Ten teams from 6 different clubs took part and it was a battle for all three medal positions in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 play. The teams first played a round robin (25 pt games) to determine seeding for the playoffs. The top three teams in each pool played for the Tier 1 title while the bottom 2 teams in each pool battled it out for Tier 2 supremacy.



The Tier 1 quarter-finals were one game to 30 points. West Prince 1 faced off against Kensington in the first quarter-final with Kensington winning the match 30-27 and moving on to face the Redd Mudd 1 team in the first semi-final. The second quarter-final saw the Colonels 2 team take on the Summerside Suns 2. This match-up of young up and coming teams saw the Colonels 2 squeak by the Suns by a score of 30-26. This victory by the Colonels 2 team set up a battle of two Colonels team in the second semi-final. The older, experienced Colonels 1 team won their semi-final match and the Redd Mudd 1 team disposed of Kensington by a scoreo 30-28 to set up the Tier 1 final. Colonels 1 defeated the Redd Mudd 1 team by a score of 30-25 to take the gold, and Kensington defeated the Colonels 2 team to take the bronze for Tier 1.



The Tier 2 division saw the EFB Jaguars, Summerside Suns 1, Redd Mudd 2 and West Prince Islanders 2 team battle for the title. EFB defeated West Prince 2 in one semi-final and Summerside Suns 1 defeated Redd Mudd 2 in the other. The Suns toppled the Jaguars in a fiercely contested final and Redd Mudd 2 took the bronze over West Prince 2.
