West Prince Islanders Win Provincial 17U Boys Volleyball Title

The West Prince Islanders made it back to back championships in the volleyball PEI Provincial 17U boys championships held recently at Bluefield High School. Five teams from three different clubs took part and it was a battle for all three medal positions. The teams first played a round robin (15 minute games) to determine seeding for the playoffs. Islanders #1 finished first with a perfect 4 win-0 loss record followed closely by Summerside Slammers #1 with 3 wins-1loss. After this the three remaining teams all finished with a 1 win 3 loss record. A tie breaking system needed to be used to determine final standings and it came down to Slammers #2 in 3rd, the host Blue Lightning in 4th, and Islanders #2 in 5th, just missing out on the playoffs by a few points.

The semifinals were one game to 25 points. The top seeded Islanders #1 defeated the Blue Lightning 25-16 while Summerside #1 defeated their club mates Slammers #2 by a score of 25-7. The medal games format was a best two out of three. The bronze medal match was a tight battle with Slammers #2 winning the close match two games to one over the Blue Lightning (26-24, 15-25, 15-13).

The final pitted the top two seeds of the tournament against each other. During the league tournaments, the Summerside club won three of the five affairs while the boys from "up west" took the other two. Fans were not disappointed. Islanders #1 took the 1st set by a convincing 25-17 score. The second set was probably one of the best in the entire spring season. It was a see-saw battle all the way. Tough serves, great defense, and some excellent attacking by both teams had everyone on the edge of their seats. In the end, ti was the Islanders who closed out the set 27-25 to take the gold medal and provincial title.

At the awards ceremony, tournament All stars were named and they were: Nathan Bulger - Islanders #1; Taylor Wallace - Islanders #2, Alex Betts - Blue Lightning; Connor O’Neill - Slammers #1; and Carter Yeo - Slammers #2

This brings to an end an exciting 17U boys spring volleyball season. Players will use this as a springboard to next falls high school league schedule. As well, there is an opportunity for these boys to train and play in the Maritime 16U and 18U tournament being hosted in Moncton on the first weekend of August. The final tryout for these two provincial teams is on Saturday, May 15 from 2:00-4:00 at KISH. Interested athletes must register with Volleyball PEI before this in order to attend.
